David Hickman's paintings delight the eye with his masterful improvisations of color, shape and pattern. His art is intended to stimulate the pure pleasure of seeing. He has said about his work: "The shapes, patterns and colors of my paintings are composed to give the viewer a fresh, provocative and pleasurable visual experience. I am not interested in any particular form of representation, obvious reference, or deep meaning when making a painting. My work is all about the possibilities of beautiful sensations. I am excited by the creative process of working with color and exploring it's wonderful, vibrant potential." Hickman has been a Professor of Art at the University of Houston for the past 37 years. He teaches Color, Illustration and Watercolor. His paintings are in numerous private collections, including The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Fine Arts and the Public Library in Houston, and also several Corporate and University collections. His series of illustrative Biblical paintings are in the collection of First Baptist Church in Houston. He has been commissioned to do many of his original abstract canvases, as well as portraits of individuals and families. His most recent work explores the possibilities of color and line in highly decorative compositions of invented and found shapes which he finds challenging to work with creatively.
